FAQ: How to replace the 1500X battery pack

WARNING! This procedure involves working with high-capacity batteries and proper care must be taken. Serious injury can result from improper handling of these batteries. If you do not feel qualified to perform this procedure please find a qualified mechanic to assist you, such as at a local bike shop or motorcycle dealership.

Follow these steps carefully to replace the battery pack on your motorboard. The battery is very tightly packed in the body of the motorboard, with only one or two millimeters of room near the Printed Circuit Board ("PCB"). This requires care when removing and replacing the battery, but is not difficult.

Removing the Existing Battery Pack

1. Remove the 4 deck screws, and lift off the wood deck.

2. Pull the front sheathed end of the brake cable forward about 1/4" and then lift it out of the guide in the plastic battery cover.

3. Lift off the plastic battery cover.

It is important to avoid flexing the PCB when changing the battery. When disconnecting the wires from the battery, do not yank on the PCB!

4. Remove the jumper wires between the 4 separate battery blocks.

5. The 4 battery packs are physically held together with either a plastic "packing strap", black electrical tape, or a small screw. Before removing the separate battery packs, notice how they are placed in the body. If we call the flat part the "lid" and the round ends the "bottom" then they are in the body in this sequence: L= lid, B= Bottom.
BL-LB-BL-LB

6. Remove the wires. Note where you removed them from, you will need to replace them onto the new battery later.

7. Remove the battery pack closest to the PCB, by pushing down on one side to lift the other side up.

8. Remove the remaining battery packs.

9. You will also find two rubber "D" rings at the front. These are just bumpers. Remove them by peeling them off, but don't throw them out, we will use them later on the new battery.

Installing the New Battery Pack

The new battery pack is shipped as 4 separate pieces, with NO STRAP OR SCREW. The strap or screw is not required to hold the batteries in place during use. When putting the new batteries in, reverse the removal procedure:

1. Install the rear battery pack first. Place it in the body, and then slide it back into position.

Notice the electrical contacts are UP.

2. Install the front monoblock, then the two middle monoblocks. Make sure they are in the proper BL-LB-BL-LB arrangement. Tuck the rubber "D" rings you saved from the old battery in front of the new battery.

3. Reconnect the jumper wires that were removed earlier.

Make sure that the short jumper wires go through the clips, and are then pushed close to the side of the body. -- This will allow the plastic battery cover deck to fit properly without pinching the wires. It fits very closely also - it is what holds the battery securely. The long black wire starts at the right front, runs down the middle valley of the battery. Connect the long black wire to the black wire attached to the PCB - careful not to yank the PCB.

4. Make sure the battery wire shown below is tucked in front of the battery, not on top of it.

5. Check to make sure your battery looks like the picture below.

6. Connect the red wire attached to the PCB to the battery.

7. Replace the plastic battery cover. It will be a tight fit.

If the plastic cover does not sit flat, there could be a wire in the way. Rearrange the wires so that the plastic cover sits flat.

8. Pull the sheathed end of the brake cable forward a little bit to get it to pop into its receiver. Just like on a bicycle.

If the brake cable is difficult to get back in, check the sheath at the LEVER - it might have fallen out of place. Don't force it - you could bend things that are difficult to repair!

9. Replace the wood deck and tighten the 4 screws.

10. You should charge the new battery for 12 hours before you use it.

11. Happy Boarding!
